In the event of International Womens Day we would like the world to meet a young women living in a local slum in Nairobi who has something to say about her future…

Brenda Kwambuka’s has been sponsored by LocalAid for the past 2 years, through this sponsorship she receives an education which in turn gives her opportunities in life and a way out of poverty so she can fulfill her full potential. She is a strong believer in social justice, this is her story…

My name is Brenda Kwambuka. I am 16 years old and the first born of a family of five children, four girls and one boy. I am in form one, in a school which is not far away from where I stay.

Since I was born and came of age, I have seen a lot of pain in my life and in the lives of those around me. Many lives are lost through physical suffering experienced during stages of life. Unfortunately most of those who suffer are far from help. I therefore long to become a journalist who will reach all places and expose all lives to a concerned world to be supported. It’s my joy to preserve life.

Most of the people who suffer are girls. I happen to come from a community where a girl child is sidelined and discriminated against. For example, my parents were isolated from the entire extended family because they bore no male child. The girls born were seen useless. This pained me to my heart. When I grow up I want to prove to the whole world that a female child is as useful as a male child. I long for a society where we have gender balance. A society that discriminates no one irrespective of one’s race or gender. A society that especially cares for the less fortunate.

In spite of the numerous challenges I face, I have learnt not to give up, for quitters are not winners. I believe my father God has good people for me, to help me attain my goals in life. I hope I will overcome challenges like discrimination and poverty and be a role model to many girls in developing countries and all people. Such challenges have forced many girls in developing countries like ours into early marriages. This has denied many from receiving Gods plans and goals in their lives. It’s a pity.

In my conclusion I would like to ask those who can help to positively invest in the lives of the less fortunate. This will build a strong society where everybody is somebody. As for me, I can, in the future help many achieve their best in life, if helped now to achieve my best in life. It’s my desire to find friends from all races, all over the world who are like-minded to support my ideas to create a strong young generation for future lives. My god give you more as you help the weak, be strong for a strong and healthy society. You are helping God to accomplish his will in his children.
