Our free medical camp was organized to commemorate Worlds Aids Day which is cerebrated every 1st of December. This was meant to give back to the community in our surroundings. In previous years we have been joining other organizations for processions to mark the day. However we decided to break the chain by serving our community.

Our Journey to Dadaab began at the Red Hole. Red hole is a small remote community we passed by on the way from Garissa to Dadaab. Here we meet with the elders who shared with us how the drought has severely affected them. They told us that each day people just drive-by and don’t care to stop and help, “we are left here abandoned” they said, with no access to a town or village where healthcare is available.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing Somalia due to severe drought and arriving in what has become the world’s largest refugee camp. The Dadaab refugee camp, just over the border in Kenya, was initially setup to host some 90,000 refugees fleeing Somalia’s ongoing civil war in March, 2009. Today, the number of refugees is estimated at over 350,000 with thousands more expected in the coming weeks. The UN is calling it ‘The worst humanitarian ciris in the world”. LocalAid wants to help.

After two years of depending on donors and well-wishers we decided that it is time we generate our own income and find ways to support our projects through social enterprises. Since we have been lucky enough to have a few acres of land donated to us, we thought the best idea would be to establish a farm and who better to help us in this endeavour than Amiran? They offer a farmers kit which includes all of the components necessary for a successful season’s harvest.

After months of research for an alternative to fossil fuels, LocalAid has now introduced the production of Biomass Briquettes to the ‘The New Horizon Centre’. This new technology has eased the burden of buying expensive fuel for cooking. We have invested in a press machine to make these briquettes which are composed of commercial and agricultural waste such as sawdust, paper and leaves. The briquettes are produced by our former street boys who live at the centre as a means to expose them to skills training in Product Development and Business Management. Very soon, we will be selling this Eco-friendly product to the public. However, we must first develop our business plan, conduct community surveys and demonstrations and then begin our mass production before effectively introducing it to the market.

This year I would like to dedicate my birthday to my father George Homeh. It is with great sadness that i launch a campaign in memory of my father whom i I lost just a few months ago. My father was a passion driven man, solely living for his immense love for music. He was an Assyrian singer and writer, yet his other love, the violin, completed his world.. Never have I seen someone play an instrument with such devotion like my father, I am sure many will agree

This Easter we distributed food to needy street children, our boys from ‘The New Horizon Centre’ also participated in giving out the food as part of our ‘Streetboys 4 Streetboys’ program. Brian, one of our boys said “It felt really good to give them food and spend time with them, I hope to do this every Easter and every Christmas”.

Finally the long awaited moment has arrived. On March 16th the boys moved into their new home and they could not be happier. After a year of hard work, dedication from our local and international supporters we finally seen the fruits of our “Streetboys project”. It was incredibly rewarding to see them settle in, yet even more rewarding that they know have a place they can call home.

Thanks to a local Good Samaritan, Mr. Kiokor Sospeter, who generously donated a one-acre plot on behalf of our street boy project we are now building a new permanent home for our 31 boys. We have been extremely lucky to work collaboratively with Lions Club Peponi in Kenya who have funded the first phase of the construction, which includes; three sleeping rooms, toilets and the kitchen
